Timo Weiland – Spring-Summer 2010 (Debut) Colection

story by Faith Bowman
photos by Adrianna Favero

Timo Weiland  began 2009 with a successful line of neckwear and wallets. By fall, duo Alan Eckstein and Timo Weiland had dreamed up and designed a breakout  RTW collection, featured in WWD in September. The cover image, their silk chiffon tank top paired with cummerbund inspired silk charmeuse and chiffon skirt, epitomized the funky uptown/downtown vibe of the line and let the world know that they had arrived, with this debut at the 22nd Street non-profit Manhattan artspace X Initiative sealing the deal. … Continue Reading

Shortly after New York Fashion Week, Harlem’s Fashion Row geared up to present collections by emerging designers at a fine arts venue in Harlem called The Gatehouse. Peter Som – Spring 2010 Collection

story by Faith Bowman
photos by Adrianna Favero

Since 2001, San Francisco-born designer Peter Som has been raising the bar for pretty, ladylike clothing with a youthful fair. His spring-summer 2010 collection again left little doubt that Som is a designer whose clothing flatters and defines the female form. Continuing with his love of saturated color and sumptuous fabrics, the collection sizzled for the eyes, igniting an immediate desire to shop. … Continue Reading

Yohji Yamamoto’s fashionable athletic wear for Adidas’ Y-3 spring-summer 2010 collection opened with a musical tribute to Michael Jackson interlaced with national military hymns. Most of the collection was black and white punctuated by colorful seals and nationalist  emblems.  … Continue Reading

I recently had the opportunity to view the Spring 2010 Badgley Mischka Bride collection in the Badgley Mischka showroom during New York Bridal Market Week. After the show, I was able to ask designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka a few questions about their collection and recent shifts in the wedding fashion market. This show also included eight new bridal looks from their lower price point Mark & James line.

Isaac Mizrahi – Spring 2010 Collection

story and photos by Sandy Ramirez

The first two lines of The Drifters’ On Broadway are perhaps the best description for Isaac Mizrahi’s Spring 2010 collection, shown recently in The Tent at Bryant Park during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

They say the lights are always bright on Broadway.
They say there’s always magic in the air.

Loris Diran – One Runway Away

photos by Sandy Ramirez
story by Seth Friedermann
styling by Loris Diran, Seth Friederman, and Anna Lisa
models are Creing Wittingham from Major’s mens division, and Elen Capri from Elite

Loris Diran is a formidable rising force in fashion. Diran possess the spirit of a chess master; he is considered and thoughtful with an obviously tactical mind, but just under the surface is an aggression that is waiting to pounce. He has married a strong and very honed artistic aesthetic with a muscular business sense, he both thinks and feels his way forward. … Continue Reading

Brooklyn Fashion Festival – Spring 2010 Collections

story by Seth Friedermann
photos by Sandy Ramirez

To be at the premier of anything is a special thrill. To be at a premier which contains not only the first night for the Brooklyn Fashion Festival but is also hosting the very first collections of many of Brooklyn’s most promising designers was a special treat. I was lucky enough to be backstage interviewing the designers and getting not only their take on their own collections but on fashion and design in general. … Continue Reading

Lacoste Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Charles Beckwith
photos by Hendrik Ballhausen

There isn’t much to say about Christophe Lemaire’s latest line for Lacoste, except that it includes some yellow pieces and there weren’t any surprises. Everyone knows Lacoste. It is a classic iconic brand owned by a large corporation. They have a thing that they do, clothes for tanned people who play tennis, and they do it well. Their clothes are usually very well-made, they last a long time, the colors hold against repeated washings longer than one would expect, they’re stylish, and the alligator says more than any text label ever could. … Continue Reading

Christian Siriano Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Michael Fragoso
photos by Hendrik Ballhausen

Petite wonderboy Christian Siriano smiled and chattered calmly backstage with press and a small army of celebrity friends and fans (such as Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Jay Alexander, Tori Spelling, Heidi Montag, Hayden Panitierre, Vivica Fox, and several other famous faces) as a public relations management nightmare raged in the more public areas of the tents at Bryant Park. … Continue Reading

Fahrd Fosté Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Kate Young
photos by Freda Henry and Kingsley Liu

Fahrd Fosté showed a collection in Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side that was based on an underwater world. This translated into a strange show that left viewers wondering whether this was fashion, art, or neither. … Continue Reading

Chado Ralph Rucci Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Charles Beckwith
photos by Sandy Ramirez

You know how in Spiderman the ordinary kid gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gets super powers? When I look at Chado Ralph Rucci’s pieces on the runway, I think maybe this was an ordinary clothing designer who got bitten by a radioactive modernist sculptor. There is no point in his shows where one is not thinking a superior artist has been at work. … Continue Reading

Toni Maticevski Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

runway photos by John Lamparski
backstage photos by Charles Beckwith

Toni Maticevski sent out a long line of stone-faced models in smart skirts and elegant dresses. The models walked in a circle around the stage. A spotlight on the side of the stage made for some very interesting images with all the beautiful lace and tulle.

Gottex Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Rebekah Glasgow
photos by Sandy Ramirez

Gottex is not new, but this season sees a new creative director at the helm of this global champ swimwear brand. The debut show put on by new designer Molly Grad was nothing short of brilliant. The high energy vibe, the sexy curvy models, and the “own it” suits made this one of the sexiest shows of the week. … Continue Reading

Argentine Designers Spring-Summer 2010

story by Charles Beckwith
photos by Sandy Ramirez

On the last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York’s Bryant Park, there was a collective showcase runway show by some of the top Argentinian designers. Over the last few months I’ve been encouraging our modaCYCLE photographers to be a little more experimental in their approach to runway photography. At the end of the runway you have 400 photographers with the same few standard cameras and the same few standard lenses, all trying to get pretty much the same shot. And where is the fun in that? … Continue Reading

Gerlan Jeans Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Charles Beckwith
photos by John Lamparski and Charles Beckwith

I first met Gerlan Marcel at one of the trade shows last season. She was sitting at a table in the corridor outside Showroom Seven, surrounded by wildly colored garments with an odd texture. It turned out they were all printed denim. It was mostly printed denim jeans and jackets, some things that looked like sweat pants, but not a whole range really. … Continue Reading

Araks Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

story by Rachel Francois
photos by Freda Henry

Models were staged as student and professorial types in an academic setting for the presentation of the Araks spring-summer 2010 collection.  Most known for her luxurious lingerie line, Araks Yeramyan presented a collegiate-themed line of solid and printed separates. The Library of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen acted as the cerebral landscape and central inspiration for these daywear spring looks. … Continue Reading

Johnny Wu, as it turned out, is a master pattern maker who helps a lot of emerging and established designers bring their rough ideas to life, and he does it right in the middle of Manhattan, as one of the many small businesses still holding on in shadow of what was once New York’s largest industry, the garment business.
