The Vessel by Lois – Fall 2010 Collection – New York

story by Brandon Ruckdashel
photos by Sandy Ramirez

The Vessel by Lois (pronounced Loy) went off without a hitch, but almost without an audience thanks to the blizzard that hit The Eastern Seaboard the night before the show and put New York’s streets under several inches of snow. Lois Samuels, with this second collection, has definitely progressed from her freshman effort. … Continue Reading

Timo Weiland  began 2009 with a successful line of neckwear and wallets. The cover image, their silk chiffon tank top paired with cummerbund inspired silk charmeuse and chiffon skirt, epitomized the funky uptown/downtown vibe of the line and let the world know that they had arrived, with this debut at the 22nd Street non-profit Manhattan artspace X Initiative sealing the deal. … Continue Reading

Ari Fish – Designer Interview

interview by Charles Beckwith
photos by Kevin Schowengerdt at Rush Wade Studios

If you saw the first episode of the most recent less-than-spectacular Project Runway season, you may have caught a glimpse of avant garde artist Ari Fish breaking the mold. Many fans of edgier fashion and conceptual art would have liked to have seen more of her in the series, but there appear to have been obtuse fashionistas blocking the driveway. As Ari does not seem to identify herself as a fashion designer, we have dispensed with our normal designer dossier questionnaire. … Continue Reading

During the last ten years the award went through several conceptual changes, but it is now one of the most prestigious garment design awards in the world, as well as one of the most financially attractive competitions for rising star designers, with its 100.000€ (U.S. $150,000) prize. … Continue Reading

Loris Diran – One Runway Away

Loris Diran is a formidable rising force in fashion. Diran possess the spirit of a chess master; he is considered and thoughtful with an obviously tactical mind, but just under the surface is an aggression that is waiting to pounce. He has married a strong and very honed artistic aesthetic with a muscular business sense, he both thinks and feels his way forward. … Continue Reading

To be at the premier of anything is a special thrill. To be at a premier which contains not only the first night for the Brooklyn Fashion Festival but is also hosting the very first collections of many of Brooklyn’s most promising designers was a special treat. I was lucky enough to be backstage interviewing the designers and getting not only their take on their own collections but on fashion and design in general. … Continue Reading

story by Michael Fragoso
photos by Hendrik Ballhausen

Petite wonderboy Christian Siriano smiled and chattered calmly backstage with press and a small army of celebrity friends and fans (such as Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Jay Alexander, Tori Spelling, Heidi Montag, Hayden Panitierre, Vivica Fox, and several other famous faces) as a public relations management nightmare raged in the more public areas of the tents at Bryant Park. … Continue Reading

Instant Apocalypse – A Photo Editorial

introduction by Charles Beckwith

Civilization as we know it has fallen. 4 Times Square sheds glass in high winds as if it were molting, all that remains of The Champs-Élysées is overgrown weeds, and the streets around Piazza San Marco are explored only by bats hungry for mosquitoes. Yet fashion has marshaled on. Here preserved, seven images from the last box of instant film in the world. … Continue Reading

Gottex is not new, but this season sees a new creative director at the helm of this global champ swimwear brand. The debut show put on by new designer Molly Grad was nothing short of brilliant. The high energy vibe, the sexy curvy models, and the “own it” suits made this one of the sexiest shows of the week. … Continue Reading

I first met Gerlan Marcel at one of the trade shows last season. She was sitting at a table in the corridor outside Showroom Seven, surrounded by wildly colored garments with an odd texture. It turned out they were all printed denim. It was mostly printed denim jeans and jackets, some things that looked like sweat pants, but not a whole range really. … Continue Reading
